With a vision of creating a new kind of public school, The Leona Group's mission is to promote choice and competition in public education for all students, including those with special needs, to help them pursue their individual academic goals.
The Leona Group was formed in 1996 in Michigan by Dr. William Coats, a national leader in education reform. Now with 12 years of history in offering a rich variety of opportunities in K-12 education, The Leona Group has grown from its initial four academies serving less than 1,000 students to providing quality educational choices to over 20,000 students in 76 schools across six states. The Leona Group is among the largest public charter school systems in Arizona and is also among the largest education service providers in the United States. In fall 2000, The Leona Group officially moved its corporate headquarters to Phoenix, Arizona, where it oversees the successful operation of all of its public charter schools in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Arizona. |
ABOUT LEONALeona grew up in a small, rural Ohio town during the early part of the 20th century. She was an outstanding student who valued school and loved to learn, but because of societal expectations at the time, her formal education was limited to just seven years. Leona's experience was not unusual for women in her time or for countless other minorities. Even today, access to educational opportunities is not equal for all genders, races, and socio-economic groups in America.
As an organization with a mission to "Empower all students to own their futures by creating schools that redefine what is possible," we are proud that our organization bears Leona's name. She symbolizes our company's commitment to creating educational opportunities and changing life chances for all young people. |
