Spanish Courses
Spanish I NS
This course is designed for the non-native Spanish speaking student. Students in this course will learn basic, useful core vocabulary and language patterns. The emphasis is on developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills using this basic Spanish. Hispanic culture and geography of the Hispanic world are introduced in this course.
Spanish II NS
Prerequisite: Spanish I NS or Instructor Approval
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to continue their exploration of the Spanish language. Students in this course will focus on more difficult vocabulary and word patterns than in Spanish I NS, with a continued focus on reading and writing skills. Exploration of the Hispanic world is continued.
Spanish III NS
Prerequisite: Spanish I II NS or Instructor Approval
This course is designed to give non-native Spanish speaking students the opportunity to continue their exploration of the Spanish language at an intermediate level. Students will extend their focus on vocabulary and proper Spanish grammar, with a continued focus on reading and writing skills in an intermediate level. Spanish III NS incorporates further exploration of Spanish tenses within printed texts and conversation. Study of the Hispanic world is continued.
Spanish IV NS
Prerequisite: Spanish I II III NS or Instructor Approval
This course is designed to give non-native Spanish speaking students the opportunity to continue their exploration of the Spanish language at an advanced level.
Spanish I SS
Prerequisite: Student must be a Spanish speaker.
This course is conducted primarily in Spanish. It is designed for students who are fluent in English and speak social Spanish but with limited literacy skills (i.e. reading and writing). In this course, students will have an opportunity to augment their vocabularies and become more adept at reading, writing and speaking standard Spanish. The curriculum includes culturally oriented materials.
Spanish II SS
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 SS
This course is conducted primarily in Spanish and is a continuation of Spanish I for Spanish Speakers. Students in this course continue to hone their Spanish literacy with an emphasis on formal writing and speaking. They will also learn the rules of accentuation and spelling and will participate in some cultural activities and projects.
Spanish III SS
Prerequisite: II SS or Instructor Approval
This course is designed for students who speak and understand Spanish with some degree of fluency but are unfamiliar with the writing system. There is a focus on the mechanics of written Spanish with a focus on common orthographical errors. Students in this course will be required to use these and other rhetorical skills to write essays. The course will incorporate material that deals with Hispanic history, culture and traditions.
Spanish IV SS
Prerequisite: Spanish III SS or Instructor Approval
Students taking this course will fine-tune their spoken and written Spanish. Students will read and discuss various genres of Spanish literature. There will be a focus on writing persuasive and argumentative essays which will lead to a research paper on an issue of relevance to the Spanish-speaking world. Students will acquire advanced vocabulary and reading and speaking skills. This course will prepare students for a successful and smooth transition towards a major or minor degree in Spanish within college.
