Social Studies Courses
20th Century Wars
This course provides students with an understanding of 20th century wars. Emphasis is placed on pre-war political, social power, examination of the European and Pacific war, examination of the Eastern European war, and more minor theaters such as Burma, Africa, and India. Students will also assess how these conflicts were resolved. Through this assessment we will learn more about today's politics and global relationships.
American History A (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: World History II
This course provides students with a basic understanding of U.S. history from the Civil War through World War I. Emphasis is placed on U.S. domestic and foreign policy which helped shape our nation’s history and role in the world. The course will focus on the themes of change, conflict and resolution. Students examine changes occurring during the units studied and assess have these changes led to conflict. Students will also assess how these conflicts were resolved.
American History B (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: American History I
This course provides students with a basic understanding of U.S. history from 1920 to present. Emphasis is placed on U.S. domestic and foreign policy which helped shape our nation’s history and our role in the world. The course will focus on the themes of change, conflict and resolution. Students examine the changes occurring during the units studied and assess how these changes led to conflict. Students will also assess how these conflicts were resolved.
Current Events
This course serves as a "living" history class where students examine current events of historical significance. Students will talk about, discuss, and analyze current events as they determine how such events will impact the future.
Economics
Prerequisite: American History 1 & II and must be in 12th Grade
This course provides students with Economic theory as applied to individual decision-making units (microeconomics) and as applied to the operation of the economy as a whole (macroeconomics). Students examine economic systems, the supply and demand model, price determination, elasticity, household income, business ownership, profit maximization, production functions and costs, competition and market structures, the role of financial institutions and the Federal Reserve, money creation, and monetary theory and policy.
Geography
This course is designed to familiarize students with the planet’s topography, map reading, climate zones, and geo-political conditions related to physical conditions around the world. Social aspects due to geographic placement around the world will also be touched upon.
Government
Prerequisite: American History I/II
This course is designed to provide students a basic understanding of the foundation and organization of the American government. Emphasis is placed on the history and principles of government, the three branches of government and the rights and responsibilities of American citizens.
World History A (Honors sections available)
This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of world history from ancient river-civilizations to the Renaissance. Emphasis is placed on understanding the changes that occurred during these periods, how those changes led to conflicts and how those conflicts were resolved.
World History B (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: World History I
This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of world history from the Renaissance to modern times. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the changes that occurred during these historical periods, how those changes led to conflicts and how those conflicts were resolved. Students will also examine the interdependency of countries and how events in one part of the world had and have dramatic impacts on other parts of the world.
