The Nogales High School Hall of Fame was created in 1990 for the purpose of recognizing alumni, staff and community members affiliated with the Nogales Public School system who have distinguished themselves professionally and have made notable contributions to the Nogales Educational System and the community. There were nine inductees this year and they were all women, including Alicia Alvarez, school leader at Alta Vista High School.
Congratulations, Ms. Alvarez! Alicia Alvarez honored by the Rodel Foundation of Arizona
Led by Alicia Alvarez, Alta Vista High School educates 450 students in grades 9-12 in Tucson, Arizona. Their mission is to provide each student a diverse education in a safe and supportive environment that promotes respect, self-discipline, creativity, academic excellence and service to the community. Alta Vista is managed by The Leona Group and authorized by the American Charter Schools Foundation. Their school leader, Alicia Alvarez was nominated and selected as a 2015 Rodel Exemplary Principal “I didn't just want to become a principal, I wanted to become a principal at a high school where I could work with students who lived in a community with high poverty rates, where parents might not have had many educational opportunities, and where I could instill hope in the lives of young adults. I wanted to work with the ‘at-risk of not graduating population,’” Alvarez said. “WHY? Because I know the power ONE caring adult who inspires hope and doesn't destroy dreams can have on a teen. And I know that as a principal I have the ability to surround those students with many adults who share my vision.” Alicia Alvarez has been the school leader at Alta Vista High School since they opened their doors in September of 2003. Alta Vista High School is rated an “A” school by the Arizona Department of Education and has been for two consecutive years. They’re accredited by Advanc-ED/North Central Association. According to the Rodel Foundation of Arizona press release, “Rodel Exemplary Principals represent some of the best school leaders that Arizona has to offer,” said Howard Paley, Rodel Chief Operating Officer. “The individuals in our high-need communities are positively impacted by these educators’ abilities to foster a positive culture where everyone is held to high standards of academic growth and student learning.” Finalists were nominated and then researchers reviewed the nominees, examined school data, visited the schools, interviewed the candidates and met with teachers and staff to select the finalists. The Exemplary Principals are from schools in high need communities and are chosen for their “demonstrated ability to inspire their staff to contribute to school-wide success and the development of a campus that is high achieving, safe, orderly and welcoming.” Alvarez is the youngest of 11 and was born and raised in Nogales, Arizona. She received her B.A. in psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Arizona in 1992 and went on to receive her master’s in education leadership from Northern Arizona University in 1997. She also has a structured English immersion endorsement. She has 21 years of experience in education and in addition to her role as school leader, currently serves on Qualified Assurance Review Teams for Advanc-ed, as a mentor/trainer for The Leona Group’s Aspiring School Leader program and as Regional Vice President for The Leona Group, overseeing two other Leona Group schools in Arizona. She has worked for The Leona Group since November of 2000. “Ms. Alvarez is an exceptional leader. She and her staff are a strong, passionate team of committed professionals who are positively impacting the lives of young people every day,” said Dr. William Coats, chief executive officer of The Leona Group. “We are very proud of our Alta Vista family and their many successes.” Alvarez became the youngest female in District 5500 to become president of a Rotary Club in 1999, and was also named “Rotarian of the Year.” In 1997, she was presented the Capstone Award by former Attorney General Janet Napolitano for her work with teen mothers. Ms.Alvarez’s passion in working with teenagers has led to an enriching career in education. “She has been the epitome of an exemplary leader, of what we want our leaders to be,” said Michele Kaye, chief operating officer of The Leona Group. “She is incredibly passionate about what she does, she’s dedicated to providing better opportunities for students and for her community.” According to the Rodel Foundation of Arizona President and CEO Jackie Norton, “A great principal builds and supports a school culture where students, staff, teachers and community members can work together to provide the best education and opportunities for all students. We’re proud to recognize the leadership qualities exhibited by these outstanding principals, and look forward to working with them as they mentor and inspire the school leaders of tomorrow.” For two years, each cohort of Exemplary Principals provides professional development, field experience, and ongoing mentorship to a class of Rodel Aspiring Principals.
