English Language Development ELD Courses
ELD 1: Starting English
Prerequisite: AZELLA labels pre-emergent through emergent (scale scores vary by grade level, refer to AZELLA and Leona Group placement of ELL student)
This class is designed to assist students in developing a foundation for acquiring English skill. Students will have a variety of opportunities to practice the areas of speaking, writing, reading, and listening to English. The activities for this class will incorporate real life experiences to assist in the acquisition of English within the context of students’ daily lives. This class will progress gradually to prepare students for their development of English and acquisition of academic language.
ELD 2: Starting English
Prerequisites: This class will address pre-emergent through basic level ELL students. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 609 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA A1/A2.
ELD 2, to follow ELD1, is intended for the pre-emergent to basic level of English language learner (ELL) within grades 9-12. Students will acquire reading and writing skills through identifying strategies designed for the development of each skill. Students will use speaking, reading, writing, sentences, and paragraphs by stating facts about personal interests. Lessons are based using Visions A which meets the Arizona 10th grade Language Arts Standards. This course will process gradually to prepare students for their development of English as well as acquisition of academic language to provide a smooth transition into ELD 3.
ELD 3: Emerging/Developing English
Prerequisites: This class will address basic through intermediate level ELL students. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 634 or below and be concurrently enrolled in A1/A2 or B1/B2.
This course is designed for the basic to intermediate level of English language learner (ELL) within grades 9-12. This course focuses on the development of reading and writing skills. Students will acquire a solid foundation of the reading process by applying fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension of connected text to a variety of literature. Students will identify comprehension strategies by comparing and contrasting information between and among texts using graphic organizers. Students will focus on the development of establishing the major steps in the writing process, as well as writing applications including expressive, expository, functional, persuasive, and literary response writing by producing outlines and summary paragraphs. Lessons are based on the Visions B text which meets the Arizona 10th Grade Language Arts Standards.
ELD 4: Emerging/ Developing English
Prerequisites: This class will address basic through intermediate level ELL students. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 634 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA A1/A2 or B1/B2.
This course is designed to follow ELD 3 and is intended for the basic to intermediate level of English language learner (ELL) within grades 9-12. Students will apply the reading process using graphic organizers to compare/contrast information between and among texts. Students will apply comprehension strategies for a wide array of informational text that is a part of our day-to-day experiences by identifying their purpose. The reading is geared toward building a solid foundation of the reading process (which consists of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension of connected text), comprehending literary text (which consists of identifying comprehension strategies for a variety of literature), and comprehending informational text (which consists of developing skills that are required to understand the wide array of informational text that is part of our day-to-day experiences). For writing, this course focuses on the development of establishing the major steps in the writing process, writing components for effective writing, as well as writing applications including expressive, expository, functional, persuasive, and literary response writing. Lessons are based on the Visions B text, which meets the Arizona 10th grade language Arts Standards.
ELD 5: Building Proficiency
Prerequisites: This class will address the intermediate level ELL student. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 687 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA B1/B2 or C1/C2.
This course is designed to provide intermediate level ELL students with English language skills that will support fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English. In this course students will interpret, explain, model, and apply various works of literature, including the use of Visions textbook C. Students will explore and execute a variety of writing assignments with an emphasis on cross-curricular content. Emphasis will also be placed on improving student academic skills in the following areas: vocabulary development, reading strategies, writing applications, grammatical skills, and oral language development. Students will acquire the critical thinking skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate multiple texts. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts standards and assignments are adapted using the English Language Learner Proficiency Standards.
ELD 6: Building Proficiency
Prerequisites: This class will address the intermediate level ELL student. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 687 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA B1/B2 or C1/C2.
This course is designed to provide the intermediate ELL student with English language skills that will help them attain fluency in reading, writing, and speaking English to move into the transitional course. Students will interpret, explain, model, and apply various works of literature, including the use of Visions textbook C. Students will explore and execute a variety of writing assignments with an emphasis on cross-curricular content. Students will evaluate improvement in the following areas: vocabulary development, reading strategies, writing applications, grammatical skills, and oral language development. Students will acquire the critical thinking skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate multiple texts. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade language arts standards and assignments are adapted using the English Language Learner Proficiency Standards.
ELD 7: Bridging English
Prerequisites: This class will address the advanced intermediate level ELL student. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 717 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA C1/C2 or D1/D2.
This course presents traits of reading strategies, vocabulary development, writing applications, listening strategies, and oral language development for the advanced intermediate English Language Learner (ELL). Students will apply writing and oral skills using the traits that good writers and presenters use. Through this course students will improve on all four areas in the English language. Students will write and present narrative, descriptive, technical, and persuasive writing. Students will research reports and analyze types of text structure. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts Standards and the assignments are adapted to the ELL proficiency standards.
ELD 8: Bridging English
Prerequisites: This class will address the advanced intermediate level ELL student. Students enrolled in the course should have an AZELLA composite scaled score of 717 or below and be concurrently enrolled in ELA C1/C2 or D1/D2.
This course provides an opportunity to practice and apply reading strategies, vocabulary development, writing applications, listening strategies, and oral language development for the advanced intermediate English Language Learner (ELL). Students will practice writing and oral skills using the traits that good writers and presenters use. Through this course students will improve on all four domains of the English language. Students will also write, present, and evaluate narrative, descriptive, technical, and persuasive writing samples. Opportunities to complete research reports and analyze types of text structure will support the transition of English learners into mainstream English. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts Standards and the assignments are adapted to the ELL proficiency standards.
ELD Language Arts A1
Prerequisites: This class will address pre-emergent through basic level ELL students. Students enrolled in this course should have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 634 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 1-4 course.
This course is designed for pre-emergent through basic level ELL students. Students will acquire the reading process through identifying facts from pictures and sentence. Students will process information from speakers who use visual or graphic support and state facts about personal interests. English Language Learners will identify strategies for the writing process and writing components through expressive and persuasive writing applications. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts standards and assignments are adopted using the English Language Proficiency Standards.
ELD Language Arts A2
Prerequisites: This class will address pre-emergent through basic level ELL students. Students enrolled in this course should have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 634 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 1-4 course.
This course is designed for pre-emergent through basic level ELL students. Students will acquire the reading process by applying vocabulary and comprehension strategies plus comprehend literary text through understanding the elements of literature. Students will use graphic organizers to compare and contrast information between texts. English Language Learners will identify strategies for the writing process and writing components through expressive and persuasive writing applications. Students will demonstrate application of writing by listing key phrases or sentences from discussions. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts standards and assignments are adopted using the English Language Proficiency Standards.
ELD Language Arts B1
Prerequisites: This class will address basic through intermediate level ELL students. Students enrolled in this course should have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 687 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 3-6 course.
This course is designed for basic through intermediate level ELL students. Students will apply task analyses of familiar processes through speaking. Students will acquire the reading process through using graphic organizers to compare and contrast information between texts. English Language Learners will apply strategies for the writing process and writing components through expository, expressive, functional, persuasive, and literary response writing applications. Students will take notes and produce sentence outlines from discussions and lectures. The content of this course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts standards and assignments are adopted using the English Language Proficiency Standards.
ELD Language Arts B2
Prerequisites: This class will address basic through transitional ELL students. Students enrolled in this course should have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 687 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 3-6 course.
This course is designed for basic through intermediate level ELL students. Students will apply task analyses of familiar processes through speaking. Students will acquire the reading process through comparing and contrasting information between and among texts using graphic organizers. The focus is on reading comprehension through critiquing information from various sources and the writing process through producing outlines and summary paragraphs from lecture notes. During the course students will be focusing on the expository, persuasive, literary response and research writing applications. The content of the course is aligned to the 10th grade Language Arts standards and assignments are adapted using the English Language Proficiency Standards.
ELD Language Arts C2
Prerequisites: This class will address intermediate ELL students. Students enrolled in this course will have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 717 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 3-8 course.
This course presents a guided focus in reading and writing for intermediate ELL students. The focus is on reading comprehension through critiquing information from various sources, including the internet and the writing process through producing essays based on notes from lectures. ELD Language Arts D1
Prerequisites: This class will address the needs of advanced intermediate ELL students. Students enrolled in this course will have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 717 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 7-8 course.
This course presents a guided focus in reading and writing for advanced intermediate ELL students. The focus is on reading comprehension through evaluating validity of information for various sources and the writing process through producing multi-paragraph essays. During the course students will be focusing on the expressive, expository, functional, persuasive, literary response and research writing applications. Students will also identify summaries of information plus engage in debates. The content of the course is aligned to the 10th grade language Arts standards and assignments are adapted using the English Language Learner Proficiency Standards.
ELD Language Arts D2
Prerequisites: This class will address the needs of advanced intermediate ELL students. Students enrolled in this course will have an AZELLA overall composite scaled score of 717 or below and be concurrently enrolled in an ELD 7-8 course.
This course presents a guided focus in reading and writing for advanced intermediate ELL students. The focus is on reading comprehension through evaluating validity of information for various sources, including the internet and the writing process through producing multi-paragraph essays. During the course students will be focusing on the expressive, expository, functional, persuasive, literary response and research writing applications. Students will also integrate information form oral documents and other sources on unfamiliar topics plus engage in debates.
