English Language Aquisition Services
Alta Vista High School's English Language Learner Program provides students with an equal opportunity to complete an academically rigorous high school program with challenging, yet comprehensive, instruction in all content areas. Student diversity is addressed through a variety of services including English as a Second Language classes and Sheltered English Instruction content classes. The English Language Learner Program allows students to achieve English proficiency in a supportive environment which emphasizes learning English in context rather than in isolation. Alta Vista High School’s teachers of English to speakers of other languages, as well as the administrative staff, are trained in Sheltered English Immersion, research-based strategies to planning lessons for English Language Learners.
English Language Development
Arizona law requires that students with a home language other than English be assessed for proficiency in oral language, reading, comprehension, and written communication. Based on the results of the AZELLA assessment, students may be placed in the English Language Development (ELD) program designed to aid them in acquiring English. Students will be required to take a mainstream course, an ELD course and ELA Elective Course during a 9 week grading period.
