English 9 A/B*
This course promotes reading, writing, speech and language concepts. Through literature study and review, students learn universal themes while applying all the forms and stages of composition including prewriting, revising and proofreading. Essay content and writing skills are emphasized. Vocabulary development and word analysis are also taught. *A/B classes are taken over the course of two blocks.
English 10 A/B* (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: English 9B
This course enhances the student’s ability to read, write, and present. The student’s critical thinking skills are improved through the study and appreciation of grammar and its components. Proficiency in styles, grammar usage and mechanics is emphasized. Vocabulary development and word analysis are also taught. *A/B classes are taken over the course of two blocks.
English 11 A/B* (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: English 10B
This course explores ideas and themes of American Authors. It integrates various modes of writing with the study of American Literature. The composition aspect of this course helps students gain ease, clarity and fluency with developing ideas, organization and style. Vocabulary development and word analysis are also taught. *A/B classes are taken over the course of two blocks.
English 12 A/B* (Honors sections available)
Prerequisite: English 11B
This course explores the ideas and themes of British authors. Students enrolled in this course will demonstrate speaking and listening skills by participating in class discussions and formal presentations. Students will write essays and personal responses to literature in addition to a research paper. *A/B classes are taken over the course of two blocks.
English Support
This course is designed to encourage Freshman students to practice the skills required to pass the reading and writing portions of standardized tests. There is an emphasis on language, the mechanics of writing and the six-traits of writing. Areas of focus also include reading comprehension skills, the inference of word meaning, and critical thinking.
English Skills
This course is designed to prepare students for material that will be on the AIMS Reading and Writing tests. Students are provided with enrichment opportunities to practice and apply their learned skills. Students will also learn test-taking strategies that can help them perform well on the standardized AIMS test.
Reading Skills
Reading Skills is a class that focuses primarily on Sophomore level reading standards to help students pass the AIMS test. Students will expand their vocabulary, reading comprehension, and literary device skills by reading various genres of literature, taking AIMS preparation assessments, and complete writing assignments that will enhance the students understanding of reading.
Reading Support
(Targets: 9th Graders)
This course is designed for the student who struggles with language arts and needs remediation to be successful in high school English courses. The objective of the course is to strengthen the students reading comprehension and reading skills.
University Composition
Prerequisite: Students enrolled in this course must be Graduating Seniors who have completed Honors English 12A and 12B.
This course introduces the student to college-level reading and writing expectations. Through its emphasis on analysis and inferential thinking, it seeks to strengthen critical thinking skills. Students will practice analysis by breaking text into parts and examining how those parts work to influence and create meaning. In addition, students will work to understand and practice the processes necessary to comprehend and produce texts and determine which are most effective for them. In short, this course aims to improve student thinking and writing.
