School Policies
Alta Vista High School believes in a safe, fun learning environment, therefore we have school policies that all students need to follow. Policies are as follow:
Dress Code
-
All tennis shoe laces are to be black or white
- Shirts must remain entirely tucked in while on school grounds
- Jerseys, slippers and pajamas are to be left at home
- Short skirts, short shorts, netted shirts, half-shirts, see-through clothing, low-cut tops, and garments that expose the back and midriff are inappropriate for school and are to be left at home.
- Straps on all skirts, dresses and tops must be at least 3" wide. Muscle-tees and tank tops are inappropriate for schools and are to be left at home.
- Students will refrain from wearing any type of headwear while on campus. This includes bandanas, hats, du-rags hairnets and rollers.
- Sunglasses may only be worn outside of school buildings.
- Gang associated clothing and symbols on clothing, belts, etc. are strictly forbidden.
- Students will refrain from wearing sagging or excessively baggy clothing. Pants and shorts must be pulled up to the waist.
- Violent, vulgar, sexual references and drug/alcohol related pictures, writing and logos on clothing are strictly forbidden.
- Undergarments are to remain covered at all times.
- Students will refrain from wearing clothing with the following numbers: 8, 13,14, 31, 69, 420 and 520.
Academic Integrity
- We highly value academic integrity and will not tolerate any form of plagiarism, cheating, dishonesty or deception that unfairly or improperly enhances a grade on an assignment, project or exam.
- A student found cheating on daily class work will receive a zero grade on the assignment with no opportunity to make up the work. Parents will be notified.
- A student found cheating on daily class work a second time will receive a zero grade on the assignment with no opportunity to make up the work. A mandatory parent conference will take place and student will be placed on a behavior contract.
- A student found cheating on daily class work a third time will automatically fail the course and a meeting will be held to review & enforce the student's behavior contract.
- A student found cheating on an exam, major class project, or term paper will receive a zero grade on the assignments with no opportunity to makeup the assignment. A mandatory parent conference will take place and student will be placed on a behavior contract.
Backpacks

As a safety precaution, backpacks and other large carrying bags, including purses and tote bags are not allowed into the classroom of Alta Vista High School. Students who choose to bring such bags to school may leave them in a designated location in the front office. Alta Vista High School assumes no responsibility for items which are lost or stolen on campus or at a school sponsored event and strongly discourages students from bringing such items to school unless they are absolutely necessary.
Close Campus
- Alta Vista High School is a closed campus. Ditching and leaving campus without permission will not be tolerated and may result in a suspension. Students who become ill or have an emergency must report to the office and consult with an administrator. All students under the age of 18 must receive parental permission to leave campus before the school will allow the students to sign out and go home. All students 18 and older must receive permissions from an AVHS administrator before the school will allow the student to sign out and go home.
Drug Free Zone
- Alta Vista High School is a drug-free zone. For your safety and the safety of others, any actions involving the possession, use or sale of nay type of drug, alcohol or other controlled substances will result in notification to the authorities and a possible suspension or expulsion from Alta Vista High School.
Eating and Drinking
- Food and drink are only to be consumed outside of the classrooms of Alta Vista High School. The only exception is bottled water with a sealable cap. Students should eat and drink before and after school and during designated breaks. Food and beverages brought into the classroom are to be left in an area designated by the teacher.
